Join CAS and the Regional Anesthesia Section for a webinar titled Managing Regional Anesthesia challenges and looking towards the future, celebrating the 2nd World Regional Anesthesia Day. This day was introduced by The European Society of Regional Anaesthesia & Pain Therapy (ESRA). This year's theme is Joining hands for a pain free future worldwide. On this day, Regional Anesthesia events are hosted around the world to mark the importance of the goal for good pain management with regional anesthesia, and to broadcast the message to all corners of the World.
 
This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and approved by the Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society. You may claim a maximum of 1.5 hour (credits are automatically calculated). 
 

After participating in this activity, participants will be able to: 

  1. Discuss the various challenges of regional anesthesia
  2. Apply new techniques in teaching RA
  3. Recognize new emerging techniques in pain control for the challenging population with persistent pain


Moderator: Dr Joanna Fifen
University of Calgary

 

Dr Joanna Fifen works at the South Health Campus (SHC) as a Staff Anesthesiologist in Calgary, AB. Dr Fifen is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. She serves as the SHC Site Research Lead and is a committee member for the Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine Fellowship. Dr Fifen is passionate about providing quality care to patients and enjoys teaching various stages of learners that rotate through the SHC. Dr Fifen completed her BSc in Biological Sciences with Distinction, PhD in Medical Sciences, and MD prior to her anesthesia career. She has published nineteen peer-reviewed publications and two book chapters and has received numerous research awards. She was born and raised in Calgary and has enjoyed the opportunities Calgary and Alberta have to offer. Personal interests and hobbies include swimming, reading, writing, photography, painting, cooking, gardening and travelling.
 

Presenter: Dr Vishal Uppal
Dalhousie University, Halifax 

Dr Uppal is an Associate Professor at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, and a board member of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA Pain Medicine). He is also the scientific program committee chair for the 2025 ASRA Spring Meeting. Formerly, he served as the chair of the Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain section of the Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society (CAS).

Talk title: Rebound Pain

After participating in this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Define rebound pain after regional anesthesia.
  2. Identify the key factors contributing to its development.
  3. Present evidence-based strategies for preventing and managing rebound pain after the resolution of peripheral nerve blocks.
     

Presenter: Dr Peter Rose
Vancouver General Hospital, Vancouver

Dr Peter Rose is a staff anesthesiologist at Vancouver General Hospital after having completed Anesthesiology residency training at the University of British Columbia and a fellowship in Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain at the University of Ottawa. At Vancouver General Hospital he is a co-director of the Perioperative Pain Service, leads the Airway and Major Head and Neck Surgery Anesthesia division and is a member of the Regional Anesthesia division. He has a particular interest in teaching and continually learning about regional anesthesia and airway management.

Talk title: Nerve injury and its management post regional anesthetic

After participating in this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the most common neurologic injuries and their etiologies associated with regional anesthesia procedures
  2. Explain appropriate assessment and investigations for neurologic injuries associated with regional anesthesia procedures
  3. Evaluate management approaches to neurologic injury associated with regional anesthesia procedures

Presenter: Dr Ahtsham Niazi
Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center, Toronto

Dr Ahtsham Niazi finished his medical education in Pakistan and has completed his training in Anesthesia in the Republic of Ireland. He has done a Fellowship in Liver Transplant Surgery in Dublin, Ireland and a Fellowship in Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain in Toronto, Canada. He is currently a Staff Anesthetist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and an Associate Professor at the Department of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine at the University of Toronto. He is currently the Vice Chair of Education and a clinician educator at the University of Toronto.
 

Presenter: Dr Reva Ramlogan
The Ottawa Hospital, Ottawa  

Dr Ramlogan is fellowship trained in regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine. He is an associate professor at the University of Ottawa, where he is the rotation lead for residents on regional anesthesia, the fellowship director and regional anesthesia director. He is a founding member and past Chair of the Education in Regional Anesthesia Interest group, of ASRA. His academic interests include the use of simulation to promote learning regional anesthesia; regional anesthesia and hip fracture outcomes; and rib fracture analgesia.

Talk title: How best to teach RA to the next generation

After participating in this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Acknowledge that teaching UGRA has both a didactic and hands on component
  2. Determine that didactic teaching consists of knowledge of anatomy and US knobology
  3. Recognize that practice includes needle visualization, and target acquisition.
  4. Understand how to break down teaching into knowledge, scanning and needling.

Presenter: Dr Vivian Ip
University of Calgary, Calgary 

Dr Vivian Ip is a Clinical Professor at the University of Calgary in Canada. She is a practicing anesthesiologist with fellowships in Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine, as well as Ambulatory anesthesia. She recently moved to Calgary from Edmonton and is working at the South Health Campus where she is the Director of the Regional Anesthesia Fellowship Program. She is the Chair of the American Society Regional Anesthesia (ASRA) and Pain Medicine newsletter committee, and the Chair of the Regional Anesthesia Section of the CAS. Her other leadership roles include: the Chair of the Environmental Sustainability Section at CAS, and the Chair of the Green Anesthesia Special Interest Group at ASRA Pain Medicine. She is also the Editor for RAPM (Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine), and an Editorial Board member of CJA (Canadian Journal of Anesthesia).

Presenter: Dr Ryan Endersby
University of Calgary, Calgary 

Dr Ryan Endersby (BSc MD FRCPC) is a Staff Consultant Anesthesiologist and Director of the
Acute Pain and Cryoneurolysis at South Health Campus in Calgary. He is also an Assistant Clinical Professor with the University of Calgary. He is extensively involved in Pain Medicine and Ultrasound Guided Regional Anesthesia and Perioperative Ultrasound education for both staff, residents and allied health professionals at the University of Calgary. He is also the University of Calgary Regional Anesthesia and Acute Medicine Fellowship Co-Supervisor and Perioperative Ultrasound Fellowship Site Supervisor at South Health Campus. He is actively involved in the Alberta Pain Strategy.

Talk title: Emerging Techniques in Regional Anesthesia and Acute pain

After participating in this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the use and mechanism of cryotherapy and neuromodulation for patients with challenging acute postoperative pain
  2. Identify indications for cryotherapy and neuromodulation in acute pain situations
  3. Compare and contrast these emerging techniques to the traditional modalities in treating acute pain
