This Continuing Professional Development module aims to help the general anesthesiologist recognize common pitfalls in ambulatory pediatric adenotonsillectomy and perform appropriate risk stratification, analgesic management, and disposition planning.
After reading this module, the reader should be able to:
1. Recognize risk factors for perioperative respiratory adverse events in the ambulatory pediatric patient presenting for adenotonsillectomy
2. Show an understanding of obstructive sleep apnea, the current literature supporting screening modalities, and how to apply these to perioperative risk stratification
3. Employ risk-reduction strategies in the conduct of anesthesia for adenotonsillectomy
4. Choose an appropriate multimodal analgesic regimen that minimizes the risk of opioid-related respiratory depression
5. Recognize limitations of postoperative monitoring in the patient who requires admission.
