Dr. Margaret McCallum Johnston (1875-1947)

Often believed to be the first woman to practice anesthesia full-time, Dr. McCallum Johnston was an honours graduate of the Ontario Medical College for Women (which eventually became Women’s College Hospital).

She was the first female intern at a Canadian hospital (Hospital for Sick Children), and eventually served as the Chief Anaesthetist of Women’s College Hospital, holding the position from 1914 to 1935. She was also married to Dr. Samuel Johnston, founding president of the Canadian Society of Anaesthetists.
